Biography and Artistic Statement

Trevor HillKenneth Trevor Hill was born in Pasadena, California and began studying the piano at age seven. Coming from a family of musicians, Trevor is a naturally gifted pianist and composer. Also studying the trumpet and flute during early education and high school, Trevor along with the La Canada High School Marching Band traveled abroad and received first place in the St. Patrick’s Day parade in Dublin, Ireland.

Continuing his piano studies at Pasadena Community College, with a major in Music Education, Trevor joined the Jazz and Swing bands where he found great success. Trevor also enrolled in the Classical Piano Duet Class under the directorship of Mrs. Mary Hense, where he and his partner performed at several local charity venues. They eventually competed in the Southern California Piano Duet Competition at the college level where they tied for first place with a duo from the USC School of Music.

After completing the two-year “Music Education Associate Arts Program” at PCC in the spring of 1993, Trevor was accepted to the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California. As a “Jazz Major”, Trevor spent two years in the program before eventually deciding to take a break from school and the piano for almost five years to pursue other personal business ventures. It wasn’t until the summer of 1998 that Trevor eventually started playing the piano again and began composing for solo piano, and eventually jazz trio.

In the fall of 1999, Trevor created an acoustic jazz trio with Anthony Shadduck and Steve Lorentzen, called the “Trevor Hill Combination.” They recorded their first album entitled “Trevor Hill Combination” in 2001. During this time Trevor also completed two solo piano albums entitled “Solo Piano” and “Pacifico”. In the spring of 1999 Trevor began teaching private piano lessons in the Pasadena area to children of all ages. Trevor continues to find teaching “musically and spiritually fulfilling. The pure joy and creativity of a child is a power that can educate and heal us at the same time.”

With music as his new guide, Trevor eventually returned to the California Institute of the Arts in the fall of 2004 as a “Jazz Piano Performance Major.” Under the mentorship of David Roitstein, and the support of several other outstanding faculty members, Trevor graduated in the spring of 2006 with a Bachelors of Fine Art in “Jazz Piano Performance”. During his last semester at CalArts, Trevor completed his fourth album collaborating with fellow students, entitled “Strong Suit”. His most recent album recorded in 2006 entitled “Rejuvenation,” was devoted entirely to his latest works for solo piano.

Currently Trevor resides in La Crescenta, California where he teaches piano to students of all ages, some of whom have gone on to become studio musicians. He also performs locally with the “Trevor Hill Combination", composes for solo piano, and continues working on compositions which are directed towards use on soundtracks for television and film.

Artistic Statement

Music is my first language. Music is a form of communication that without words is able to conjure emotions of happiness, sadness, chaos, boredom, and peacefulness. All of which can occur sometimes within the same piece of music. Music has always brought me peace of mind in a sometimes insane world. I believe that music not only nourishes the soul but it also allows for our deepest range of emotions to be realized such as joy, despair, peace, pain and love.  Music is a powerful medium through which positive physical and emotional change can occur, and it has enabled many positive changes to occur within my life. The beauty lies within the listener’s ability to internalize music in his or her own time and space.

My compositions individually represent a reflection or a snapshot of where, and who I was at the time of their conception. Therefore each piece is intentionally and inherently different from the last. I find beauty in the unpredictability of life, and am blessed to be able to find the inspiration to create my music in the same unpredictable flow.

It is my goal to write music that is ever changing and evolving, as a constant reflection of my journey through life. I’m excited at the possibilities the future presents, enabling me to share my music with others, and create music with the current generation of artists today in new mediums and through new technologies.
